Summary
- In the story, In a Mystery of Heroism, Fred Collins was a solider fighting in the Civil War. In the beginning Crane sets the scene with all this happening like people dieing and canons going off everywhere. Collins is hungry and other guys want water too. So he goes across the battle field to get water. He went across the battle field and got a bucket of water and came back. Coming back he sees a lieutenant was dieing and he stopped and gave him water. Coming back to the tent he found that the bucket was empty!

- Fred Collin's despite the heavy shelling, he obeys his thirst to get water across the meadow. He could have turned his back of the first blast but, something compels him to continue.
- Also people were giving him canteens to fill. Collin's felt like his group was relaying on him to get them water.
- While running back, Collin's is stopped by a dying lieutenant asking for water. First Collin ignores him, but then he runs back to give water to the dying lieutenant. An act perhaps out of his conscience to help the the dying man, but shows that he was willing to help the man.
Naturalism
- Naturalism is an offshoot of realism. In the story most people would not have ran across a battle field for water. Or not everyone would got back to help the dying lieutenant.
